Obituary:Charles Ernst Queitzsch was born on August 4, 1919 in Manhattan, New York and died Saturday, August 18, 2012 in Evansville, Indiana. He was the son of Mary (Loak) and Charles E. Queitzsch. He grew up in Throgg's Neck, The Bronx, New York, and the closeness of the Atlantic Ocean encouraged his love of the sea and ocean fishing.
One of the highlights of his high school years was the ocean voyage to Germany in the Olympic year of 1936, where he spent some three months traveling and visiting relatives. He held a number of construction and factory jobs at the end of the depression, and served with the Marines during World War II. At the end of the war he joined the New York City Police Department and retired from there with the rank of detective. After his retirement he first worked as head of the security force of the American Broadcasting Corporation Building and then spent many years working in the Parkchester (Bronx) community in which he lived.
He knew and helped so many people in the community that he was known affectionately as the "mayor" of Parkchester. He was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Parkchester in the Bronx. Charles moved to Evansville in 2002.
Charles was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Mylda (Karukstis), his parents, his infant sister, Barbara, his brother, Harry and his sister, Caroline Kofod of Port St. Lucie, Florida.
Charles is survived by his daughter and her husband, Karin Marie and William J. Kirsch, his daughter Linda M. Singer, his granddaughters, Rebecca (Klaus) Treutlein, Hannah (Wolfgang) Treutlein, (both of Germany), Sarah (Chris) Anderson of Champaign, IL and Diana (Jody) Withers of Eden Prairie, MN, as well as six great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff of Pine Haven Health and Rehabilitation Center and Heritage Hospice for the loving care he received these past few weeks.
