Obituary:
John N. Payne, 93, of Evansville, Indiana passed away on Monday, May 14, 2012 at Angel River Health and Rehab Center.

John was born on November 20, 1918 to Laura J. (Algood) and John N. Payne, Sr. He was appointed a Kentucky Colonel by John Y. Brown and was the downtown weather observer for almost 60 years. John was presented the coveted Ben Franklin Award by the National Weather Service. After retiring in 1978 from A.L. Fredrick, Inc. as Corporation Secretary, he became the TV weatherman known as “The Professor” on Channel 14 for several years. John was an avid collector of documents and pictures recording the history of Evansville. These articles were often center pieces to media articles on old Evansville. These will now be a part of the Evansville history collection at the University of Southern Indiana.

John was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William Tom Payne; and infant sister, Carrie Agnes.

He is survived by his work and a group of close friends.

A Funeral Ceremony will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, May 18, 2012 at Browning Funeral Home, 738 Diamond Avenue. Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Friends may visit from 4:00 PM until 7:30 PM on Thursday, May 17, 2012 at Browning Funeral Home. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the funeral service on Friday.
